Hon. Alan Kamin

Judge Alan Kamin graduated from MIT in 1963 with a major in economics and a minor in biology. He received his J.D. from Stanford University Law School in 1966, after which he clerked for a U.S. Tax Court Judge in D.C. for one year, before moving to San Francisco—and later Phoenix—to practice tax law. He then joined the Arizona Attorney General’s Office, where he eventually supervised attorneys dealing with various children’s issues.

In 1983, Judge Kamin was appointed to the Arizona Superior Court (for Maricopa County) in Phoenix by then Governor Bruce Babbitt. He served on various calendars for 20 years, with a majority of his time handling a civil calendar.

Judge Kamin retired from the Arizona Superior Court in 2003. He briefly joined a Phoenix law firm as a mediator, before becoming an assistant to the Arizona Supreme Court. During his time with that Court, Judge Kamin wrote memoranda concerning whether that Court should accept cases for review from the lower courts.

In 2007, Judge Kamin and his wife moved to the Boston area to be closer to their two sons who live in the Boston and NYC areas.

As an Access to Justice Fellow, Judge Kamin will be working with the Legal Services Housing Appeals Task Force. The Task Force, a state-wide consortium of Legal Services housing attorneys, is based at the Massachusetts Law Reform Institute (MLRI) and the National Consumer Law Center (NCLC). The Task Force tracks housing appeals, provides advice and assistance to both Legal Services and pro bono counsel (and sometimes helps find counsel if there is none), organizes moots, and coordinates and helps in the preparation of amicus briefs. Alan will be based at MLRI.
